We had another guy tell me it was junk, don't put any money into it, but this guy was able to repair it a few years ago when my oldest used it for jazz band. I think it's also harder to work on and he's not familiar with it. Kids aren't that gentle and marching means being outside, laid on the ground, picked up and put down a lot, etc.

This is who the school district uses and we trust him. While he did say he could find us something, he wasn't pushing a new instrument. Well, it's been repaired once and needs more work.

NOUAUX, is the following below the name: '1er Prix du Concours Internationel d'Execution Musicale a Geneve Soliste a la Garde Republicaine'.This has to be the best conclusive forensic evidence tying a serial number to a date of manufacture of this Couesnon sax. It came with a 'CERTIFICAT D'ESSAI ET DE GARANTIE', printed on Monopole Conservatoire certificate paper, with the serial number 11103 written in by hand, dated in Paris by hand November 15, 1960, and signed and stamped by M. I recently bought a Couesnon Monopole Conservatoires alto sax with serial number 11103.

Horn is in full working order and sounds nice and dark and smoky in that French way. It is not the prettiest one I've ever seen but it works well. Valves really look awful but are intact and work well.the third valve actually has audible compression! The leadpipe has been replaced at some point because it accepts a small-shank flugelhorn mouthpiece and not the "standard" Couesnon French shank. The one water key is intact and is working. All slides are intact and reasonably clean.

I don't see any significant dents or creases anywhere except for a few small indentations in the tubing just ahead of the third valve. Flugel is in remarkable condition for being so old: silver plating is mostly intact and reasonably clean with a few areas of wear, some faint dings and some pitting to the finish. I also see "N (15) 0" near the end of the leadpipe, a "B" on the second valve casing and "348" above "Rauber Montreux Lausanne" which I believe was the name of the Swiss music store that originally sold this.

I do see "53" inside the pineapple which means manufacture date of 1953. In typical mysterious Couesnon fashion, I can't find any obvious serial numbers anywhere. This fine thing is a Couesnon Bb flugelhorn. LOVELY COUESNON FLUGELHORN IN SILVER PLATE FROM 1953!ĭark, smoky, jazzy, legendary.those are just a few of the many many ways players and fans alike have used to describe the marvel that is the Parisian Queen of Flugels.
